You no longer need a client login if you’re dealing with a simple home network where you trust all your family members–but sometimes it’s best to be cautious. If you have auto logon configured, you’ll be prompted to revert to login-required mode. You don’t have to search around for this; the WHS connector app will launch it for you.

Client PCs can connect to the server through a wireless router, but the server itself cannot operate wirelessly. The first time you do this, you actually run the Windows Home Server dashboard. After you’ve set up WHS, Launchpad and Dashboard are two different animals. You should set up a user account that is not the same as the system administrator account, and give it a different password. This will allow you to work just with your own file shares. Windows will unceremoniously dump you to the desktop, at which point you can install the chipset and the network drivers. Unlike in the Windows 7 setup, installing chipset drivers didn’t require a reboot.

Now that installation is complete we need to add all the of the latest updates from Microsoft. This will provide you with the latest server security updates and Power Pack updates as well. Power Packs are updates that add new features and provide fixes to known issues for Windows Home Server. You don’t need to leave a keyboard, monitor, or mouse to the server.

Choose New Installation, read the warning about erasing all the information on the hard drives in the system -- the first of three such warnings -- and click Next. Change the boot device priority list so that the first boot device is either the machine's DVD drive or a drive connected to its USB port, depending on which you'll be booting from. Installing WHS from a DVD is the easiest method; if the computer you're using doesn't have a DVD drive, your next best option is to use an external DVD drive that attaches via USB. Alternatively, you can copy the required files to a USB hard drive or USB flash drive and install WHS from there.
